Even though the game is far from new, I decided I wanted to list my personal five favorite captures. After all, it’s not as if there’s anything to talk about regarding the potential sequel. So, we might as well keep on talking about the greatness of the first game, right?

5. Sherm

Out of all the enemies in the game, Sherm is arguably the most unique and unexpected (and that’s saying quite a bit). Sherm is the small tank enemy that resides in a few different kingdoms. It can shoot an infinite number of explosives and is rather fun to use. However, admittedly, the controls take a minute to get accustomed to. Once you get them down, you’ll be capturing Sherm just to mess around with its shooting prowess.

4. Bullet Bill

A classic and staple enemy throughout the years, finally being able to control a Bullet Bill was something special when I first played through this masterpiece. While you need to be quick on your feet after you capture one, the dynamics it adds to the gameplay can’t be understated. Capturing a Bullet Bill opened up so many different and unique platforming sections. For the Sand Kingdom alone, it made it so much more fun to traverse and explore.

3. Yoshi

Wow, do you want to talk about an unexpected surprise? What made capturing Yoshi even better is the fact that you had to go to the top of Peach’s Castle. Nintendo is so good when it comes to paying homage to their old games. As far as using Yoshi, this is the most fluid the green dinosaur has ever handled in a 3D environment. It’s such an enjoyable experience to capture him that you feel severely disappointed when you have to ditch him. Poor Yoshi, he’s always getting abandoned.

2. Cheep Cheep

Some of you may actually be surprised that I have this so high on my list. Let’s face it, though, water levels have always been something of a problem during the history of the franchise. The level design of most water levels throughout the years have been wonderful, but the mechanics have been frustrating at times. When capturing a Cheep Cheep, all these issues are resolved. Besides not needing to worry about health, you can move around seamlessly underwater with one of these bad boys. It makes all the difference in the world.

1. Bowser

Even though this is one of the shortest captures in the game, it easily remains my favorite. That moment when you realized that you needed to capture Bowser to save the world is one that I will never, ever forget. It was one of the most epic moments in video game history, forget just Mario. If there ever is going to be a sequel, let’s hope that we’ll be able to play as Bowser a little bit longer. Who doesn’t want that?

So, as I present this list of my 10 favorite episodes of all-time, you better believe that they’re all coming from the first three seasons. It’s okay if you think that isn’t fair as this is my list, right? For the record, this list is in no particular order and I even added an honorable mention because I couldn’t leave it out. So, without further ado, let’s roll.

Honorable Mention: “Christmas Who?” – Season 2

The reason this is an honorable mention is that Christmas was always a special holiday for me as a kid. As a tradition, I always watched this episode (about a dozen times) right before Christmas morning. It holds a special place in my heart and is one that I still love to this day.

“Texas” – Season 1

Oh man, this episode is just pure gold. Sandy gets homesick and wants to go back to Texas. So, SpongeBob and Patrick decide to cheer her up. But, before that, they make fun of Texas to prevent her from leaving right away. Things get dicey for them when they take their jokes too far. If you can keep a straight face during this episode then more power to you.

“No Weenies Allowed” – Season 3

It’s safe to call both SpongeBob and Patrick weenies. Yet, in this episode, SpongeBob is determined to get into the roughest joint in town. His struggle is real and this is bar none one of the funniest episodes in the series. Watching SpongeBob attempt to be tough is about as hilarious as it gets.

“Squirrel Jokes” – Season 2

Sandy and SpongeBob have quite a dynamic relationship in the first couple of seasons. They’re best friends, but they like to poke fun at each other. In this episode, SpongeBob goes a little too far. But, come on, some of the jokes the writers came up with here were pure gold. They still crack me up to this day.

“SpongeBob Meets the Strangler” – Season 3

Without a doubt, my favorite part of this episode is when Patrick thinks he’s The Strangler. He’s my favorite character in the show and this episode is one of the reasons why. On a side note, The Strangler has such a great performance in this one. It’s sad we didn’t see more of him.

“Big Pink Loser” – Season 2

“What’s so great about being a big pink loser?” This was the infamous quote that Patrick said to SpongeBob. Here, we see Patrick try everything to win an award of any kind. He attempts to copy SpongeBob with everything that he does. This eventually annoys him and leads to fantastic entertainment.

“Wet Painters” – Season 3

Most episodes are pretty simple with their setup. This one is certainly one of them as SpongeBob and Patrick spend their time in Mr. Krab’s house. Their goal is to paint the room, but the catch is they have to do so without getting paint on anything. The endless struggle is comedy gold and true fans remember how it ends.

“Sailor Mouth” – Season 2

To this day, I’m surprised this episode was ever a thing. SpongeBob stumbles upon a bad word, but he doesn’t know right away. He then gets Patrick to join him and they then become a couple of sailor mouths. Mr. Krabs eventually tells them the word is bad, but during a board game, SpongeBob slips up. Again, can you believe that this was aired for a kid’s show? I’m glad it was.

“Band Geeks” – Season 2

Most episodes are known for their comedy and while this one delivers it in spades, it’s also the end which still gives me chills. The song that SpongeBob and his crew were able to perform is still one of my favorite moments in animated history. Yeah, I’m taking it that far.

“Chocolate with Nuts” – Season 3

The true reason these are not in any order is that it’s too hard for me to rank them. But, this one here could have easily landed at the number one spot. It’s that freaking good and is an all-time classic if you ask me. From start to finish, the content is stomach-punishing hilarious.

“Life of Crime” – Season 2

Alright, this one might be number two if I actually ranked all these episodes. Watching SpongeBob and Patrick lose their minds over a stolen balloon gets me every single time. They literally leave town fearing for their lives. Man, the writers were amazing back in the day.

Dexter is a fairly popular TV show that centers upon the main character (Dexter) who spends his days hunting down and killing serial killers. While there’s plenty of drama and mystery along the way, this really is the main premise. Due to this, it’s natural that many characters ultimately meet their fate in the end.

But, it’s not just Dexter’s victims who end up kicking the bucket, it’s also a plethora of main characters. In this sense, at least for me, the show is quite controversial in how it’s executed. However, in a long-running TV series, it’s somewhat refreshing for plot armor to be somewhat disregarded (except for Dexter, of course).

At the same time, there’s a fine line between the willingness to kill off characters and simply killing off too many of them. For my liking, this show falls more toward the latter. To explain why, let’s take a look at some of the characters who wound up deceased.

Paul Bennett

Alright, so many wouldn’t consider Paul Bennett a main character. Yet, in the first season, he played an integral role in the story. He was a constant thorn in the side of both Dexter and his love interest, Rita Bennett. To keep a long story short, he ended up dying in prison after almost proving that Dexter was the one who landed him there.

This death wasn’t too bad as Paul came off as an antagonist the entire time. So, in my book, it was totally acceptable.

James Doakes

Look, the makers of the show had no other choice here. They either reveal Dexter as a serial killer or kill of Doakes in some fashion. But, when he died, a part of the show died. The dynamic of Dexter and Doakes throughout the first two seasons was sorely missed in the later seasons.

They tried to replace him, but there was only one Doakes. Again, however, everyone involved in making the show was handcuffed at the point of his death. In my mind, yet again, they did make the correct call here.

Frank Lundy

This one stings to this very day. Frank Lundy is arguably my favorite character in the entire show. While he only made an impact in two seasons, his impact was grand. His death just felt unnecessary and, for me, it’s when the show began to go downhill quickly. The first half of season four (with Lundy) is much better than the second half (without Lundy) if you ask me.

He added a special dynamic to the show and while his death wasn’t without logical reasoning, I still feel it could’ve been avoided.

Rita Morgan

Rita Morgan (she changed her name after she married Dexter) was arguably the third most vital character in the entire show (behind Dexter and Debra Morgan). When I first watched the conclusion of season four, I was convinced that her death never happened. I watched each and every episode that followed waiting for her reappearance.

Ultimately, though, it never happened. This death right here is the one that fans of the show will remember most. Not only did Rita die, but the relationship Dexter had with her kids faded over time. Rita and her kids kept Dexter real and while a few love interests followed, they were shallow in comparison. Why, why did they really need to kill off Rita?

Maria LaGuerta

Honestly, this may be the most random death in the entire franchise. I will openly admit that I always strongly disliked Maria LaGuerta as a character. She was self-centered, manipulative, and looked like an iguana (sorry, see, I don’t like her). But, her death kind of just happened.

She became to understand who Dexter really was and got killed for it. I didn’t lose sleep over this one, but I can see if it rubbed some people the wrong way.

Debra Morgan

The finale of Dexter has received harsh (I mean harsh) criticism over the years. In all honesty, it’s tough to conclude a show like this. Yet, killing Debra was probably not the answer. Sure, it got the message across that everyone Dexter loved ended up getting hurt. But, it just fell flat.

To me, the show should’ve ended with Rita finally understanding what Dexter truly was. Instead, we got Debra’s death and Dexter faking his own death.

Yeah, I think they killed too many darn characters in this show. Looking back, Deb, Rita, and Lundy should’ve never died. The others were understandable, but that’s just my humble opinion.

But, when you look back at the first two, you remember just how amazing the franchise was. You also remember just how many epic characters were introduced. Today, I want to check out what I feel are the five best. I will also say which movie they were portrayed the best in. This is all my opinion, though, and it’s fair game if you feel differently.

5. Miles Dyson

Miles Dyson is not an ultra-popular character in the franchise, but he is one of my personal favorites. His portrayal in Terminator 2: Judgment Day by actor Joe Morton was awesome. Dyson was introduced as an elite-level computer engineer. However, later in the movie, it becomes known that his microprocessor will lead to the development of Skynet. While he ultimately is responsible for the creation of the system that will destroy humanity, you still can’t help but feel for him when you watch the movie.

4. Sarah Connor

Let’s just be honest right now; Linda Hamilton is the only Sarah Connor that matters. She is the true OG and seeing her return in Terminator: Dark Fate was amazing. But, it’s her character in the first two films that makes everyone fall in love with her (specifically the second one). Seeing her transformation from a happy-go-lucky girl to a take-no-prisoners fighter is truly something else.

3. The T-800

For those wondering, the T-800 is the terminator that Arnold Schwarzenegger plays in virtually every film in the franchise. Once again, though, the T-800 is the best in the first two films. Now, in the first, it’s programmed to kill Sarah Connor. Yet, in the sequel, it’s programmed to save John Connor (Sarah’s son). Both machines are portrayed by Schwarzenegger, but they are programmed differently. Honestly, I don’t know which one is my favorite between the two. It’s too close to decide!

2. The T-1000

The original T-1000, played by Robert Patrick, will always be my favorite antagonist from the series. Given that this model is made of liquid metal, it’s quite diverse in its actions throughout the film. Its ability to sample anything it physically touches (of equal size and not complex machines) and morph into stabbing weapons makes for creative dynamics. Oh yeah, the sucker can also flat-out run. Patrick is also perfect with his facial expressions throughout the film; it’s just pure gold.

1. Kyle Reese

Can we just finally admit how good of an actor Michael Biehn is? No, I’m not talking about Jai Courtney’s horrendous Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genisys (which actually may be the worst movie I have ever seen in my life). I am referring to the original Reese who was played by Biehn. This version could be my favorite movie protagonist ever. Yeah, that may be a stretch, but man is it close. Words can’t do this one justice; just go see his performance if you haven’t already.

Well, there you have it? You may be wondering where John Connor is on this list as he’s such an important character in the series. But, I have never really been that big of a fan of any of the character’s iterations. That’s just me, though. Anyway, that’s my five best! What’s yours?

Games to Play Alone

Sea of Solitude

Sea of Solitude is a beautiful game to get lost in right now. You play as Kay, a woman who has been overcome by loneliness and turned into a monster. Meet fantastical creatures and (truly quite terrifying) monsters, solve challenges, and explore a flooded city by swimming, on foot, or by boat. One of the best parts about Sea of Solitude is its ability to immerse you completely in the story — so if you’re stressed out right now, this is the solution. The world you explore is beautiful and evolving, with surprises around every corner, and you’ll want to take your time to uncover every corner of it. On your adventures you’ll meet a variety of monsters, some terrifying, some wonderful, and confront them to learn more about Kay — and ultimately discover what it means to be human.

Sea of Solitude is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Stardew Valley

Staying sane while a pandemic is sweeping the planet requires some effort, and a key part of maintaining your mental health is having a routine, which is where games like Stardew Valley can help. Having tasks to do each day in the game ensures you’ll stave off boredom and maintain a routine — although we recommend showering and wearing some clean clothes every day too! Part farm simulation, part RPG, it’s easy to get lost in the brightly-colored world of Stardew Valley, but make sure you’re disciplined about your gaming time.

The story is simple yet strangely satisfying. After leaving your job with the Joja Corporation, you inherit your grandfather’s farm and have to decide whether to rebuild the community center or support the local Joja Mart. The game’s all about improving relationships with the residents of Pelican Town too, giving them presents to earn their trust. And of course, farming, which is strangely methodical and relaxing. From chopping wood and watering crops to optimizing your farmland, it all takes time and effort and it will take you a while to earn specializations and add diversity to your farming routine. It’s a pleasant distraction from the uncertainty of the outside world right now, and a game you should definitely consider playing!

Stardew Valley is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, and Wii U.

Control

Remedy Entertainment’s 2019 shooter is one of the best ways to spend a weekend in isolation. You play as Jesse Faden, sent to explore the “Federal Bureau of Control” and defeat an evil force known only as “The Hiss.” Not only are the graphics impressive, the physics are some of the best around, as you use Jesse’s powers to fire objects of all shapes and sizes at enemies. The story may be fairly simple, but there’s enough intrigue (and gameplay hours) to see you through at least a weekend in self-isolation.

The Last of Us: Remastered (2014)

If you’re anything like us, you played Naughty Dog’s standout hit back on release day in 2013 on PS3. One of the best games of the century, the timing couldn’t be better for a replay, as our world outside increasingly seems to echo Joel and Ellie’s reality. If you’re late to the party — better late than never — it’s a great time to explore the remastered version on PS4 before The Last of Us 2 drops on the 29th of May.

Games to Play With Friends

Borderlands 3

We don’t all want to play alone, but not everybody enjoys online co-op either — so what’s the solution? Borderlands 3 is one of few shooters with local split-screen co-op for up to two players (only on PS4 and Xbox One). Choose from four playable characters (Zane the Operative, Amara the Siren, Moze the Gunner, or FL4K the Beastmaster), each with their own skills, and set out to join Lilith’s Crimson Raiders. Set six years after Tales from the Borderlands, you’re a new recruit sent to investigate the Children of the Vault cult and their leaders, Tyreen and Troy Calypso. If blasting mutants and exploring a vast game world sounds like your thing, pick up the fourth main entry in the Borderlands series today and get your other half or your housemate involved. Borderlands 3 will provide a welcome distraction from what’s happening in the real world.

Borderlands 3 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (split-screen only available on PS4 and Xbox One).

Hidden Agenda

For something a little different to movie night, why not give Hidden Agenda a go? This PS4 exclusive has been out a while, but it’s great for anybody with housemates or partners who aren’t gamers. Part movie, part game, Hidden Agenda uses Sony’s PlayLink features, where up to six players can participate using a free app on their smartphones. Take part in forensic investigations or take turns to make crucial decisions during this crime thriller, which features a branching story influenced by your choices. There’s also a competitive mode to try.

Hidden Agenda is only available on PlayStation 4.

A Way Out

Whether you’ve heard of it or not (it flew under the radar for many of us), A Way Out is one of the best gaming adventures to date, from the creators of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. There’s no single-player mode here — instead the game is local co-op, although online co-op is also available. Jailbirds Vincent and Leo are planning a jailbreak and you’ll work together — albeit reluctantly — to escape. Every single decision is made with co-op in mind, and communication here really is the key to success, which is what makes A Way Out so engaging.

#1. The Last of Us Part 2

It’s no coincidence this tops my list of games I’m looking forward to in 2020. It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for a Last of Us sequel (and we have, really)! This has been in my Amazon pre-order list for an age, and I was originally looking forward to its February release. However, it’s now been confirmed for the 29th of May, a date for the diary if you were a huge fan of the original Last of Us. Sadly, the opportunity to play an exclusive demo of the game at PAX East in Boston later this month is no more, as Sony’s presence at the event has been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Still, it’s not long until the end of May, right? I’ll be replaying the remastered version before number 2 drops.

#2. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Another game it feels like we’ve been waiting for forever is the FFVII remake. Square Enix announced their plans to release the game in an episodic format, with the first episode set to drop on April 10th this year. As a huge fan of the original game back on the original PlayStation (and somebody who’s played the original recently on the Raspberry Pi), I can’t wait for this!

#3. Ori and the Will of the Wisps

I must admit to being a latecomer to Ori and the Blind Forest. Although the original was released back in 2015, I didn’t play it until this year, after getting an Xbox One for Christmas. The game’s hand-drawn graphics and touching story about Ori, a little guardian spirit, left me eager for a sequel and thankfully I’ve not had as long to wait as fans who played the first game back when it was released! Ori and the Will of the Wisps is out on the 11th of March on Xbox One.

#4. Half-Life: Alyx

If like many of us, you haven’t yet dropped some serious cash on a VR setup, this may be the game to make you rush out and get one. I’ve always loved the Half-Life games, and Alyx is set before Gordon Freeman’s return in Half-Life 2 (my favorite installment). The trailer looks amazing, and I can’t wait to have a go on my friend’s VR when the game is released in March.

#5. Watch Dogs: Legion

Although the original Watch Dogs wasn’t as much of a success as anticipated, I’m one of the few who really loved the game, from the graphics to the hacking aspect. I have to admit to being rather disappointed by the second game, so I’m pretty hyped for the third installment, set in dystopian London, following the activities of surveillance state organization Albion. Watch Dogs: Legion drops on the 3rd of March, so we don’t have long to wait!

Which games are you most excited to play this year? Are there any I’ve missed off my list?

Now, for the record, there are some franchises on this list that have appeared on the Switch in some capacity (whether via ports or certain retro titles available for online members). However, for the following five series, we deserve brand-new entries altogether that are currently not available on the Switch.

Mario Kart

Ironically, a Mario Kart game is currently the highest-selling video game on the Switch as we speak (that being Mario Kart 8 Deluxe). Yet, as alluded to, I am not satisfied with ports (in general). Sure, it is impossible to dispute the success of this port but at the same time, we have not seen a new entry in this franchise in around six years.

As for the chances of this occurring, the number of units it would probably sell gives credence to the argument for it. Nintendo has never released two full-fledged Mario Kart games on the same home console before but this would be a little different. I feel somewhat confident that this one has a chance.

Star Fox

The closest thing to a Star Fox game on the Switch is Starlink: Battle for Atlas. In fact, Fox McCloud and friends actually play a somewhat significant role in that game (in the Switch version). Still, an actual solo video game starring Fox McCloud is what I have been craving for a while.

Unfortunately, his last entry was not received all that well. Of course, I am alluding to Star Fox Zero on the Wii U. Nintendo attempted to make use out of their GamePad but the end result was a somewhat short game with highly questionable controls. I may just have to come to the realization that this franchise had its time and place. However, the lore of the Star Fox universe is too intriguing and Nintendo could do so much with the characters that are present.

Banjo-Kazooie

Alright, so this probably has a snowball’s chance in Hell of happening. Rare is the video game company who developed the classic Banjo games on the Nintendo 64. However, many years have passed since then and Rare has been a Microsoft property for nearly two decades now.

And, due to this, the franchise has literally been dead since the Nintendo 64 (Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts can’t touch the magic of the originals). The only inspiring news is Banjo and Kazooie did make their way to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. So, a new installment in the franchise is not impossible (but it is highly unlikely).

Donkey Kong Country

Yep, this is another instance of a franchise getting a port but not a new game. Since 2015 (when I finally got my hands on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Wii U), I have been eagerly awaiting the third entry in Retro Studios series.

Yet, years and years have gone by and as we sit in 2020, there are still no signs of that happening. Now, the chances look even worse as the studio took over development for Metroid Prime 4. There were rumors for a while that they were developing a new game but we may never know what that was. As far as Donkey Kong Country is concerned, a brand-new company may need to do something with the IP.

F-Zero

Talk about a series that has not seen the light of day in countless years, how about F-Zero? The last major entry was F-Zero GX and that was released way back in 2003 on the Nintendo GameCube. Indeed, it has been a while.

This futuristic racing franchise has been a fan-favorite for quite a long time and the Switch is the perfect system for it to make a resurgence. Will it happen? The safe bet is to expect another entry to be omitted on yet another major Nintendo home console.

The fan in me desperately wants to see all these titles land on the Switch over the next few years. I understand the reality of the industry, however, and realize that some of these will remain to only pipe dreams.

Over the years, Donkey Kong has been involved with some of the most treasured games in history. However, perhaps no series represents the sheer brilliance of the character better than the Donkey Kong Country series. As with many others, they have become some of my favorite video games of all-time.

Today, I would like to look back at this legendary series (as no signs are pointing to the release of another entry any time in the near future) and rank the games from worst to best. Just a quick note, this list will only include the five entries from Rare and Retro Studios (with their corresponding scores as I have personally reviewed all of them).

5. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble (5.3/10)

No, I am not a fan of Donkey Kong Country 3. For the record, I have played it quite a few times and even went through the torture of completing it 103 percent. Simply put, I believe that Rare ran out of ideas as the game is just a landfill of different, terrible gimmicks.

It certainly does not help that this entry introduces Kiddy Kong as a playable character who is beyond the worst Kong in the entire franchise. The level design is also incredibly bland and pale when in comparison to the earlier titles. Top it all off with a soundtrack that is not up to par and consistent framerate issues and you have yourself a real stinker of a game.

4. Donkey Kong Country Returns (6.9/10)

One thing is for sure; Donkey Kong Country Returns revitalized the Donkey Kong franchise and Retro Studios deserves a lot of credit for that. Now, this game is a lot different from the original series as it features a much broader camera view, simultaneous cooperative play, and the omission of traditional bonuses and such.

Retro Studios delivered their own, fresh take on the franchise and while I am not in love with Donkey Kong Country Returns, it is definitely a solid game. The mechanics are very fluid and the level design really picks up near the end.

I just felt when I first played this game (and when I still play it) that something was missing. Luckily, Retro Studios nailed it with their next title (more on that later).

3. Donkey Kong Country (8.9/10)

Let me just say this, I take no issue with anyone who still feels that the original Donkey Kong Country is the best and their favorite. The one that started it all for the Donkey Kong Country series is still one of the greatest video games that has ever been made.

From the fantastic soundtrack to the groundbreaking atmosphere and design to the refreshing presentation, this title took the world by storm over 25 years ago and still remains a marvel to this day.

It has stood up tremendously to the test of time (though most games have on the SNES). They simply do not make games like this anymore.

2. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (9.5/10)

Remember when I said that Donkey Kong Country Returns was missing something? Well, Retro Studios follow-up entry answered what it was missing; David Wise. Wow, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is just a masterclass of design, artistry, presentation, sound, you name it.

The soundtrack is so good that I listen to it on a near-daily basis. And, the gameplay is probably even better. Bringing back Dixie Kong was a smart choice and the addition of Cranky Kong added more dynamics to the mix.

Words can’t describe the visual presentation, either, as it is one of the most beautiful Nintendo games ever developed. It is too bad that the Wii U was such a colossal failure as even though it was ported to the Switch, it could never receive the notoriety it deserved. For me, it will always be incredibly special.

1. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest (9.8/10)

And, now we come to the GOAT. Without a moment’s hesitation, I can utter that Donkey Kong Country 2 is one of the top five masterpieces ever created in the history of gaming. Yeah, it is that good. It took everything the first title produced and amplified its greatness tenfold.

The new and improved bonus system added clever secrets that were more than worthwhile to find. David Wise composed the soundtrack and (shocker) it was world-class and unbelievably atmospheric. This game makes you wonder how the same company made Donkey Kong Country 3.

What really sells the experience of Donkey Kong Country 2, however, is the execution and replay value. Heck, what am I talking about; everything about this breathtaking jewel is perfect.

Conceiving this list reminded me just how much I want to see another mainline Donkey Kong Country game. With Retro Studios taking over production for Metroid Prime 4, perhaps a new developer could take over the IP. Hey, we can only hope, right?
